Out and about around Inverbervie
On 22nd june 1992, Inverbervie celebrated 650 years of becoming a Royal Burgh. Inverbervie or bervie as it is better known dates back to the 12th century ad when Simon of Inverbervie witnessed a charter transferring lands of balfeith to Arbroath Abbey. Royal Burgh status was conferred on the town in 1342 by David the 2nd of Scotland.
Over the years many interesting events have taken place and several natives of Inverbervie have made their ‘mark’ on the world. One such was Hercules Linton who designed the “Cutty Sark” tea clipper and to whom a commemorative garden with monument was erected in recent years, near the modern Jubilee Road Bridge exists.
The first flax spinning mill in Scotland was opened here in 1792. More recently the town gained notoriety when the local chip shop “The Bervie Chipper” was voted the best chip shop in the UK in 1992.
